What is Barbershop?
Barbershop harmony is a style of unaccompanied vocal music characterized by four-part chords for every melody note in a song. The melody is usually sung by the lead section, with the tenors harmonizing above the melody, the basses singing the lowest harmonizing notes, and the baritones completing the chord. You do not have to understand the technical aspects to know that it is fun for women and men to enjoy the fellowship and the creation of music together. We provide all the tools adn lessons for you to meet that goal; the ability to read sheet music is not required. If you are someone who would like to sing with a chorus that is committed to singing excellence, we welcome you.
If you like to sing, we invite you to visit the River City Sound Chorus on a Wednesday evening. Sitting in on one of our rehearsals is the perfect way to find out more about us, and what we can do for you! You’ll have the opportunity to hear us perform four-part, acappella harmony, and you’ll be invited to join us on the risers to experience the music, friendship and fun for which our chorus is known!

About the River City Sound Chorus
AFFILIATION – The River City Sound Chorus is a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society (SPEBSQSA), a non-profit organization of approximately approximately 18,000 members in Canada and the United States, and more in 30 other countries.. The headquarters is in Nashville, Tennessee.
PERFORMANCE – The main purpose of the River City Sound Chorus is to get out and sing for our community. We sing at annual shows, a number of community events, and at annual competitions.
EDUCATION – In addition to sharing our music with others, another great passion of ours is learning more about the art of acappella singing. Vocal instruction is a regular part of chorus rehearsals, and a very important component of the chorus experience. A couple of times a year, we will get coaching from a visiting master in the art of barbershop, where we learn many fabulous tricks of the trade.
COMPETITION – In the Fall of every year, the River City Sound Chorus may participate in the Land O’ Lakes District competition/festival. Competitions/festivals are a special time for choruses and quartets to come together to sing for each other and get some constructive feedback from a panel of Barbershop Harmony Society judges.
QUARTETS – Most choruses have a number of members who form their own vocal quartets in addition to singing with the chorus. River City Sound currently has three quartets, and we are very proud of them! Go to our CHAPTER QUARTETS page to learn more about our quartets.
