A North American wide organization of 23,000 male singers, headquartered in “Music City USA”, Nashville, TN, enriches lives through singing; perpetuates and celebrates the barbershop harmony style; serves each new generation of singers through support of vocal music education; serves audiences through an uplifting, wholesome variety of a cappella musical entertainment, and serves members by sharing fellowship, performance skills and leadership development. Barbershop is universal United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Ireland, South Africa and Spain. The BHS, here in North America and its ten affiliates worldwide are building better communities and a better world, by bonding diverse people through the pure enjoyment of a cappella harmony as all Society members join to “Keep the Whole World Singing!”
One of the 18 Districts of the Barbershop Harmony Sociey that includes chapters in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. There are 50 chapters in total in 5 Divisions of the District. Winnipeg is in the Northern Plains Division along with Dauphin, Regina, Saskatoon, Minot, Grand Forks, Fargo, Bismarck Mandan and Fergus Falls.
Sing Canada Harmony a registered charity established in 2008 to unite Canadian a cappella singers through service to youth and adults in schools, communities and the three Barbershopping organizations – Barbershop Harmony Society, Sweet Adelines International and Harmony Incorportated. The Sing Canada Harmony Scholarship Fund exists in perpetuity as a permanent resource to support vocal music, particularly in schools and communities across Canada. Sing Canada Harmony provides scholarships to individual choristers, music educators, quartets, and barbershop singers.
Incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in 1959, Harmony Foundation International has lead the philanthropic programs of the Barbershop Harmony Society. During the last six years the beneficiary of the charitable income has been the education and outreach programs of the Society.
Women Barbershop Organizations
Assiniboine Chorus gather together in celebration of the art form known as barbershop music. They are an award-winning chapter of SWEET ADELINES INTERNATIONAL (Region 6. Their rehearsals are on Tuesdays at 6:45 pm (Sept. – June) at Churchill Park United Church (upstairs), 525 Beresford Avenue at Nassau, here in Winnipeg.
Sweet Adelines International is a highly respected worldwide organization of female singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performances. This independent, non-profit music education association is one of the world’s largest singing organizations for women. The international membership of nearly 27,000 women, all singing in English, includes choruses in most of the fifty United States, as well as in Australia, Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Scotland, Sweden and the Netherlands. There are also prospective choruses in Denmark, Greece and United Arab Emirates. The organization encompasses more than 1,200 registered quartets and 600 choruses.
Their motto: “Harmonize the World.”
A vibrant international organization of women of all ages, recognized for world-class singing in the barbershop style and promoting bonds of friendship. Most of their Canadian Chapters are located in Eastern Canada. There is a Harmony Inc. chapter in Brandon, Manitoba. The American chapters are mostly on the eastern half of the United States.
